- The houses in olden times were not like the houses we have now. They were made from mud and were thatched with grassy sods. Some of them were thatched with straw and more of them with rushes. The rushes were got in bogs.There were no slated roofs in olden times. In olden times the bed was in the kitchen. This was called a settlebed. There was only one appartment in the houses. The people of the house slept in the settlebed. The fireplace was always at the gable wall. The fires were on the hearths.There was no grates in olden times.
