  1. Shops were common in olden times. These shops sold groceries but did not sell clothes or boots. These were got in the town of Monaghan. Small amounts of groceries were got in the local shops but most of the groceries were bought in Monaghan. Groceries were bought in the shop beside the chapel after Mass and this is still carried on. Tobacco, cigarettes, bread, tea and sugar are still bought after Mass. Money was not always given for goods. Sometimes they were got on "tic" to be paid for later. The shop-keeper sometimes exchanged meal for potatoes or maybe groceries for potatoes or corn. Sometimes groceries were given for work done. When the road from Tyholland Creamery to Castleshane was being repaired about fifty years ago, the men working on it got no wages, but they got a note every Saturday from the contractor to be handed to a grocer in Monaghan.
