Out of long rushes I used to try to make a hat, baskets, and a rattler for a child. This is how I would try to make the hat. Firstly I would collect ten groops of rushes with ten in each groop. I would also collect strong grass which would do for the ribbon. Then I would plait the rushes together. It was an easier task to make a child's rattler. You would need four long rushes three to plait and one to tie. When this was done i would get a stone and put it in it. Burned matches were used to play with long ago. I used to collect used to matches and when I would have up to a hundred matches I used to build, castles, towers, bridges, and a good number of other things. I still make some of those toys at home during the holidays.
