- Burnchurch National School is situated in a district which from the number of ancient buildings in its neighbourhood should provide material to fill even this book comfortably.
Nearest of these is Burnchurch Castle, built by the Fitzgeralds of Desmond. This name is probably devised from its original "Branchirche". (Egan's Kilkenny Guide) and nothing much is known of its history. Several of the accounts given by the pupils of various events include mention of it.
On the other side it a Protestant Church. In the graveyard attached is a tomb in which the remains of Harry Flood remembered from his Philippic against Mr. Grattan. This tomb was secured a duel being fought for its possession. Flood and Agar being the principals. The latter was shot dead. A trial was instituted against Harry Flood as Kilkenny Assizures 1770 and he was acquitted of the charge against him.
