    Long ago there was a hedge-school near Purcell's Cross under a shough bush. Jim Walshe's grandfather taught the children. He taught them English writing and Arithmetic. The pupils brought stools and cushions made of straw to sit on, but the strong pupils used to take them off the small children for themselves.
    The children brought potatoes and cabbage as payment to the teacher.
    He lived in a big house a little distance from the cross and the remains of the house are still there to be seen yet.
