Reading, Writing and Arithmetic, and many a learned scholar received honourable positions in America from his education in this "hedge-school." My great grandfather received his education in the above mentioned "school" and tradition tells us that those poor scholars were obliged to sit on the ground, while their master carried on the work of instruction. Those teachers were paid quarterly by the rich people of the district, and those who were unable to do so, presented their master with some little token of gratitude at Christmas.
