Dear Master,as you requested I have tried to jot down from memory some of the old stories and proverbs I heard around the fireside in my childhood,but they are only skeletons.They are sadly lacking in the charm and inspiration that the old storytellers infused into them.The art is gone with the grand dignified old boys,whose only ambition was to excel in the art of storytelling,who lived from hand to mouth with a fine disregard for wealth or luxury.
They were the old Gael and the old Gael is almost gone even among the old-aged pensioners of the present day.In their time they seen no chance of bettering their condition in life.Theirs were the sad prospect of being huers of wood and drawers of water for the stranger.All that was left to them was their story and song.
The new Gael is altogether a different class of man.Circumstances and association with Yank and Briton has cast him in a different mould.He is now a man of affairs.Struggling to attain the luxuries and living of the present day leaves no room in his mind for the stories of the past.Perhaps he is a wiser,but surely a sadder man.
