- Local Marriage Customs
Some people count Shrove Tuesday as the luckiest day of the whole year, to get married. The Unlucky days are, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The unluckiest month is May. It is said that a May bride has always a tear in her eye, or marry in May and you will rue the day.
As the old rhyme says:-
Monday for (the) health,
Tuesday for Wealth
Wednesday the best day of all,
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses,
And Saturday no day at all.
A man that is going to get married and wants money as a dowry, goes to his intended's house accompanied with another man and takes a bottle of whiskey. He treats all in the house and he asks the parents for the girl. If the parents are well pleased with the man he gets the girl for a wife.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
