The Bride's people, in some instances, resented their intrusion and did not welcome them. This led to trouble. Enraged at not being made welcome, they quarrelled with the company present. Free fights took place and much destruction of property resulted before they took to flight. As a consequence of the disturbances, the authorities prohibited the dressing up of young men in straw and made it illegal for any one to be a member of the Straw-boys.
The last occasion on which Straw-boys visited a wedding house in this district was about forty years ago. The house visited was Mr Andrew Mc Gowans, in the townland of Gornaleck, Parish of Ahamlish, Barony of Carbury, Co Sligo.
The Police got word of their visit, surrounded the house, arrested the Straw boys, brought them up at the local Court when each Strawboy got two years imprisonment.
