- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)as "Hedge Schools" sprung up.
In order to defeat the edict of England, certain men began to teach schools in old barns and sunny corners of fields sheltered by hedges.
This continued for quite a long time.
The last place in this district where a "hedge schoolmaster" taught was beside a very close hedge in the townland of Newtownward, Parish of Ahamlish, Barony of Carbury, Co Sligo.
His name was James Costello, a great grandfater of the present Costello family who live in the townland of Moneygold.
Other teachers of hedge schools in the Parishes of Ahamlish and Drumcliffe were John Gallagher, grandfather of John Gallagher who lives next door to Mount Temple N.S. Grange, Co Sligo - and a Mr Feeney and a Mr Bernard Harte, native of Maugherow Co. Sligo.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
