  2. In olden times the houses were built with rough stones and doib, used for mortar; it was roofed with wood sticks and thatched with rushes. There were no chimneys only a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. These houses were built by men who knew or cared very little about style. They were built to stand severe storms and were generally built in low lying ground surrounded on all sides by trees. Most of these houses contained only two rooms. One was used for a kitchen and the other a bedroom. Every kitchen had a bed in it. There were two windows in the house, sometimes there was glass in the windows. Otherwise a bag of hay was stuck in it at night. The floor was usually made of clay or doib.
