- Severe weather.A memorable time in this locality is the time of the great snowfall. The roads and the Castlefield were level. One could bring sheep and cattle from Frankford to Inniscrone and would not meet a ditch. In the morning when the people woke up the snow was up to the top-story of the house. For three weeks the children could not go to school neither could the postman deliver the letters. At the end of the three weeks he came around but he had to walk. There were a lot of sheep buried in the snow.This is a funny story but a true one and this occurred during that big snow-fall.It is the custom in parts of the wilds of Mayo for old people to buy their coffins and keep them under their beds.An old woman died while the roads were impassable at the time. Her son went to the next door neighbor where he knew they had a new coffin and he asked for it to bury his mother in and promised faithfully that when the snow was gone he would provide them with a similar one.When the old woman heard her “wooden jacket” was to be taken she said “Bedad Mary will never warm her back in my jacket.”Written by –
