  1. Principal roads in this district.
The main roads in this district lead between Ballina and Sligo. The Mail coach leads directly from Ballina to Sligo. It was given this name because the Mail coaches ran on it long ago before railways were invented. it has also the name of the "stirabout" road because during the time of the famine in 1846 the English there distributed a can of porridge to each poor starving man. For this porridge the Irish had to make roads through the bogs and most of the big walls were built by the Irish. They also built bridges. The landlords paid the Irish 4d a day and they got can of porridge also. This road rasses through Dromore West and Balisodare.
There is another road which leads to Enniscrone. It is not hilly because it is a new road and is called the new road. One can always know an old road because it is all hills and when people are making a new road instead of going up and down the hills they go around the bottom of the hill. At about two miles from Ballina there is a crossroads on the "New" road. It is a long road to Iniiserone but it is a good road. "West's bridge is built on that road. During the time of the famine a man named "West" built that bridge. This bride is also known as Ardnaree bridge. He never got any money for building it because he put bricks in it and he was told not too.
