  1. It was down by Banna's banks I strayed,
    One evening in June,
    And mingled with the breeze,
I hear a sweet old Irish tune,
It was played by such a skilful hand
    So pleasing and so low,
That it told me of the glorious times
    In Ireland long ago.

And as I bent my ears to hear
    Old memories round me came,
And when I heard my country's wrongs
I learned to know her name
    It was there I stood,
Until evening shades were falling quickly down
    And spreading their sable mantles,
    O'er Ardfert's historic town.

And since that eve by Banna's shore
I have rambled o'er the foam,
I have heard sweet tunes and other rhymes,
    Some thousand miles from home
But oh, my heart is longing still,
    To hear again that tune.
