“One night a certain man in this parish was coming over by New Forest at a late hour at night.”
One night a certain man in this parish was coming over by New Forest at a late hour at night. He heard the most beautiful music that could possibly be heard. At first it gave him great encouragement he thought it was boys and girls dancing at the cross-roads.
But when he drew near there was no body to be seen. It was then he thought it must be fairies. Every time he stood to listen the music stopped. As he kept going the music seemed to follow him until at last he came to a stream and all at once the music stopped. It seems the fairies cannot cross a stream. It is an old saying that the fairies will not cross a stream.- Bailitheoir
