    There was once a king who had three sons and they were very fond of game.

    The boy went into the house and sat down. The old woman came to the door and asked for lodgings. She got them but would not come in until he took a rib of her hair to tie the dogs and the gun. She gave him two but instead of tying the dogs he let the ribs drop into the fire. She asked him if he tied them and he said he did. She came up and sat down and asked him if he had had a good hunt. She asked him if he killed the hare and he said "No, but the dogs bit it in the legs". She said "And if you saw the bite would you know it" and he said he would. She lifted up her old petticoat and showed him the bite. He said "How could that be?" and she said "I am going to kill you". He said "You won't be able". At that he made for his gun, but she said "Rib, squeeze". The rib answered from the fire and said "It is hard for me to squeeze for I'm burning here". She knew then that she was caught. He had her nearly killed when she asked him to spare her life and she would tell him where his brothers were. She gave him a magic rod, and told him to go out and strike the ground, and his brothers and two dogs would arise. He did
