  1. The landlord in this district was Mr T. Hurley. He was very much disliked by the people and of course all of them were alike. They took him to be very bad. Evictions were very numerous by him. He turned households out on the road-sides but afterwards made agreements with them by getting another farm for them, but not half as good as they held previous possession of. They were fond of taking bribes and this led to a number of evictions. At the time the English owned all the lands and the landlords were appointed by them to collect the rent.
    The farms were very often sold by auction as nobody would take possession of them, when the evictions were made. Afterwards, in later years, the children of those who were evicted got several lands. Landlords had the privilege of travelling through every man's land, shooting and hunting as they pleased. They also gave the title of "game keepers". If other people such as the common folk were found on the lands shooting or hunting, he would impose
