- Long ago the people used to grow flax. First the ground was ploughed and harrowed. Then the seed was sown It remained in the ground until August. Then it was reaped and tied into sheaves, and stooked. It remained in the stook for two or three weeks. It was then steeped in a bog-hole and lay there for a month. It was then lifted and spread out in a field to dry. It was tied into sheaves then and put into a stack.Afterwards it was dried on a flake over a very large fire and then beetled. It was then scutched on blocks with a hand scutcher and all the shells were taken off. It was then spun and made into thread and brought to the weaver to be woven into cloth. When it was taken from the weaver it was bleached and made into linen.
