- Shops were common in olden times. There were a lot of country shops through the country, and a lot of people used to go to them. Long ago people used to walk from Manorhamilton to Sligo and carry firkins of butter to sell it.
In olden times buying and selling went on after mass, and the articles sold were tobacco, sugar, bread, and many other things.
Money was not always given for goods, labour was given instead. People used to bring a bag of potatoes or a bag of oats and barter them for goods out of the shop. "Boot," and "Change," were given as luck money.
Markets were held and are also held now.
There were hucksters, pedlars and dealers in this district, and they used to go round gathering rags, and feathers.
There were no unlucky days for buying and selling.- Bailitheoir
