The materials used for fire were sticks and turf. Borac and cabbage-stalks were burned in Summer.
The methods employed for giving light at night were Bog-deal, rush-lights, and "Paiderg" made from calics dipped in grease.
The rush-candles were made locally, they were made by peeling rushes and dipping them in melted fat and leaving them to harden. Dip candles were also made, the grease was poured into a mould and a piece of whipped cord placed in the centre of the mould served as a wick.- Bailitheoir
