When an animal such as a horse is sold a halter is given to the buyer. In olden times there were three fairs held in the year in Athenry.
These are the dates of the old established fairs, the 2nd May, the 2nd July, and the 27th October. In addition to those there are monthly fairs held. As a rule butchers and dealers come on the farms and buy stock from the owners.
The fairs in Loughrea are held on the 11th February, 24th and 25th May, 20th August, and the 5th December.
There are special fairs for horses held both in Athenry and in Loughrea. There are also special fairs held for the sale of lanbs and sheep.- Bailitheoir
