   Some of the tenants could not afford this and instead they paid it by working for the landlord. The workmen had to be at work at eight o'clock every morning. They were so poor that their breakfast was either cold potatoes of Indians meal stirabout and sometimes they ate it so they went to work.
   In addition every tenant had to cut a boat load of turf for the landlord. This was about seven cribs and when it was dry it had to be carted to him, and no bad turf would be taken.
   Most of the landlords had a bad end. The last of the Brownes lived alone in Claran. Although he had plenty of money he lived a miserable life and nearly all the big house was knocked. One day as he was standing at the door some men found pleasure in pegging stones at him. He was badly wounded and the windows of the house were all broken.. The weather was very cold and as the windows were broken he got a severe cold and died shortly.
