When the grain was off the sheaves they were lifted, and left one of top of the other, for thatching.
Next the straw was drawn, that is it was straightened and freed from grass etc.
Sally rods were then got and cut in two foot lengths, and pointed. The thatcher got up on the roof and started. One person at the foot of the ladder reached him up the straw in small quantities and the rods called scallops, were firmly fixed down so as to fasten the thatch on the roof; these scallops had to be fixed very strongly so that they would defy all storms and jeep out the rain.
The man at the foot of the ladder trimmed, and pointed the scallops while the man on the roof was putting on the straw.
