- Local marriage customs
In olden times in this district the people usually got married in the month of may because this was the time the servants left their places.
When a man wanted to marry some girl he took another man with him called a black.foot and went to the girls house. They usually took a pint of whisky with them.
They asked the girls father and mother if they agreed to the girls marriage. If they did so the whisky was introduced.
They asked what the parents were going to give with the girl
Her father would say " I will give her a sovereign "
Her mother would say " I will give her a pair of blankets"
This was called match-making
