- First briars are gathered, then they are scraped and bent and put into bundles. Then wheat straw is got, and the man spreads it in bundles on the roof. Then it is pegged to the roof with the briars. There are not so many thatched houses now, because people think that slates or corrigated iron make a better roof, and that it is not so expensive. The man who does the thatching is called a thatcher.
