- The soil is first ploughed in the Winter time, and then it is harrowed in Spring. If it is rough it is ploughed in the opposite direction to that taken by the first ploughing. It is then ready to be made into drills. A drill plough is used for this purpose which cuts the clay into long banks called drills about 10'high.
