The seaweed which grows in the bottom of the sea is gathered in late spring. It is put in little heaps in fields beside the sea, and is left there until it is properly dried. Then it is put into a kiln and lit, and is left there until all the weeds are burned.
It is taken out then and sent away to factories where iodine and other chemicals are made from it.
