Melvin, and others were arrested by British forces, tried for treason and found guilty, probably by a packed jury. He was sentenced to five years penal [?] servitude as being a member of an unlawful society.
On his releasement he again entered public life as a Nationalist. Forwarding the peoples interest as far as possible both by speech and influence for many years.
However in later life he became a District Counciller and chairman of Ballina board of Guardians and later he became a Justice of Peace. He remained in this position until the Treaty of 1921. When the English ended in Southern Ireland.
In Melvins old age his spirit for speech making did not dessert him. For at the age of eighty he presided at a "Blue Shirt" meeting at Ballysokeery Chapel And by his speech making, caused great amusement to the gathering and by his witty answers to interuptions.
