- (continued from previous page)Strange to say, this splendid weed enriches land in which it grows for a time. Little swellings on its roots act as storehouses for an important plant food. These swellings, called nodules, are also to be found on the roots of the pea and the vetch. However, farmers do not like to see whins on their headlands. The seed blows far and wide, and the weed spreads quickly. When whins get rooted and grow big, they will keep strong men busy in the winter months striving to stub them.
