    A pilgrim from beyond the sea
    Upon a lowly pallet lies,
    A love, surmounting agony,
    Bright gleaming in his tranquil eyes;
    So shall the rose in deserts bloom,
    When faith irradiates the tomb.
    The gentle voice begins to fail,
    Saint Bernard then, for it is he,
    Now speaks, "the children of the Gael
    Invoke thy blessing, Malachy.
    Across wan features flits a smile
    From dreaming on his western Isle.
    He lifts his hand: "I bid ye bear,
    O sons of Banba! o'er the sea
    One parting benison to where
