    Transcription
    I would especially desire the diffusion of civic zeal, because in it I see the means, the only means, of human improvement. The effect of modern civilization up to a certain point has been good; it has tended to free man from the dominion of an armed minority, who stupefied and worked the human race as if they were so many machines which they had made.
