  1. There was some years ago a hedge school in Coolawn midway between the villages of Bodyke and Tuamgraney. It was built in the spot where Patrick Grady (carpenter) now lives. It was a mud cabin but the Grady family rebuilt the walls with stone. The teacher was paid by the parents the fee charged being 2d a week or sometimes less. The subjects taught were reading writing and arithmetic. The books were supplied by the priests of the parish. A book for each class and of course the teacher got some for himself also. The pupils were graded into three classes the beginners, the middling ones and the good ones. When teaching reading the pupils of a certain class woudl circle round the teacher who used to sit on a large stone in the centre of the flor. Then he would call in four or five pupils and point out the words to them with a scallop. The sums taught were very simple.
