    Even at the present day some people follow the latter custom.
    A cross was cut on the top of the cake & so far as I can ascertain it was made so that the cake would bake better & that it would not burst.
    The cake was usually baked on a griddle or in an oven.
    Bread was never baked in front of the fire standing against a support.
    Griddle bread was made & at the present time it is used by the people.
