member of the family sat around it with a noggin or wooden vessel of buttermilk under his arm, and he ate and drank his fill. The potatoes were peeled with the finger nails as they believed peeling with knives was wasteful, and that most of the potato was cut away. After this meal they worked hard till it was long dark. They usually had their supper about 8 o'clock, and they retired early.
The supper consisted of bruised or mashed potatoes which they called colcannon. Each member of the family got a good dish of this hot. He then made a hole in the centre of it, and put into this hole a "mioscan" of butter. When the butter was melted he lapped up the contents of the dish, with a big spoon, after falling asleep before he had the meal finished.
