  1. Corn is a crop that is grown in every part of Ireland and there is no farmer without his crop of corn let it be big or small.
    In the district around Rockcorry corn is sown in Lea ground or ground out of which potatoes were dug. The manure is spread on the Lea ground before ploughing which is done early in the year about December or January. If planned in potato ground it does not need to be ploughed until March and it is already manured when the potatoes are planted.
    The corn is sown any time after St. Patrick's Day on the furrows. It is then harrowed up and down, across and up and down again. Whenever it takes root and is well above the ground it is rolled to firm it in the ground and break the lumps. Later the farmer pulls the thistles and gathers the stones off the ground.
    No further care has to be taken till it is a golden yellow and is then reaped. This is either done with a binder or a mowing machine or a scythe. The latter is used only when the corn is lying and when there is a very small quantity of it. The corn is gathered together and tied in sheaves. Four or six sheaves are stood up to-gether each is called a stook. Later whenever it is dried it is put in rucks in the field.
