For your only son to Heaven has gone"
"My God, my God", the old man murmured
And going down on bended knees
"I knew my son was too kind-hearted
I knew my son would never yield
My son was shot in Dublin
    Fighting for his country bold
He fought for Ireland and for Ireland only
    For the harp, the shamrock,
    Green, white and gold."
