    They were summoned away from their work and home
    full many a time before
    That westerly track they had traversed oft
    and the waves were like old friends now
    you might fancy they knew that staunch canoe
    as they leaped round its gallant prow

    They are gone - and away, away to death-
    they pull with a hearty will
    while the watchers move in an eager group
    to the top of Drondallon hill
    They see as the pilots near the ship,
    the sea give one fatal roll,
    And they cry to the love of God above
    to pity his creature's soul
    5)
    Ah! now is the moment of bitter need
    but that need will soon be past
    It is vain to struggle in Death's embrace
    and his cold hand has gripped them fast
    Oh! the light is sweet to the darkening eye!
    and the sea makes a lonely grave,
    But no human power in that awful hour
