- (continued from previous page)The pipes they used were called clay pipes. The tobacco was not like ours but they would get in a good store of coltfoot and dry it and then they would smoke it.
They would hand round the pipe and let each man get a smoke. About ten o'clock they would get their supper. The supper consisted of oaten porridge and buttermilk. In other cases it consisted of griddle bread and tea.
