  1. Some years back a man named John Smith lived in Cliffin. This man used to make poteen.
    The police hearing of his illegal activities came one day to arrest him. John, seeing them coming fled and the most athletic of the police started in pursuit. they ran up Cliffin and out across Beagh Hill towards the river. John jumped across and stood on the other side, But the policeman was unable to do so. "That was a damn good jump, John," he said. "The devil thank me ," said John, "I had a damn good race to it".
