    The fair in Spancill Hill is held every year on 24 June and many years ago there was a great drought in the county. The wells were dried up and water was very scarce. The people of west Clare travelled (traveled) as usual to the fair but were charged large sums of money for water for their horses. It is said that they cursed the day and ever since the 24th June has been a wet day
