    the day and were broken by the men at night by means of hammers. Four pence a ton was paid for the breaking of the stones.
    The famine must have affected this district very much, as many of the men working on the road were known to lie down along the side of the road to eat grass and shamrocks.
    At Leiter Big Tree, which is in close proximity to the Lower Lavey Catholic Church and Killyconnan National Schools and where the above road begins, a fair used to be held. This fair was discontinued about eighty years ago.
