  1. A firkin was a wooden vessel made of ash. It was about the size of a soda barrel. There was a wooden lid attached to it. It was used long ago by the people for bringing butter to the market. It used to hold seventy five pounds of butter and the people used to get three or four pounds for it. They were made by coppers and were all in latts put together with sally hoops.
