    The North-Eastern winds bring rain while the north-western ones bring snow, frost and sleet. The south wind is the warm wind in this district. There is a church bell in Ballymurphy and an old belief is "If Ballymurphy bell can be heard from Rathanna it is a sure sign of rain".
    Swallows flying low is a sign of bad weather. Bats at night is a sign of fine weather. Trushes keeping to the wood is a sign of storm. When the robin ceases singing it is a bad sign. When they see the first cuckoo they say "summer is here at last.
