The great local saint St. Kieran of Saigir.
He is commemorated at the present day by the holy well, the graveyard, the bush on the Roscrea road known as St. Kieran's bush and a pattern? held on his feast day, March 5.
He was one of the Pre Patrician saints in Ireland, and it is said that he baptised the first christians in Ireland.
St. Patrick it was who sent St. Kieran to this place in the centre of Ireland. He gave a bell to Kieran and told him it would ring out when he reached his destination. St. Patrick met Kieran here years later.
Kieran's mother founded a convent, the first in Ireland at Killyon. The ruins of the convent can still be seen on the land of Denis Dunne, Killyon. When he was drawing stones from it some years ago the horse ran away with the load and was near being killed.
