  1. The travelling folk of this district are the Hutchinsons and the Mac Cartys.
The Hutchinsons make their living by making tin cans and brooches and selling them to the people of the country.
They also solder saucepans. Some of them are chimney sweeps and bottle buyers. The women of them sell lace-cords and paper flowers, and beg food, turf, straw, old shoes and old clothes.
The Mac Cartys are horse buyers. They buy old broken winded horses, and gives them a dose which cures them for a time. They the sell them as good as working horses. Some of them are also cattle drovers and chimney sweeps.
The Mac Cartys have a house in Birr, and are said to be wealthy. The Hutchinsons live in caravans or wagons.
