  1. There was once a farmer who lived at Carrigbyrne in Co. Wexford about five miles from my house.
    On the farm was a bog and in the middle of it was a large rath covered with grass and rushes.
    The people around the place considered it very unlucky to go near the rath or to touch anything that grew on it.
    This farmer needed some rushes and as there were good ones on the rath he said he was not afraid and he would cut them.
    His wife persuaded him not to do so, but in spite of her, he cut them and threw the load at the back of the house.
    Next day his little four-year-old daughter happened to be playing about and she sat down to rest on the rushes.
    Her mother missing her went
