  1. Long ago when the people would open a new shop and the first man or woman in was to "hansel" it. Another thing is that if a person bought a new bag or a new case or a new purse bag the person that would have bought it for another person they would always put sixpence in it for good luck or for a "hansel" because it was an old custom that when anybody would be giving a present of a purse it was the custom that they should put something in for luck.
