- "Cockpit Lane" now called Houghton Place and "Tanyard Lane" (See page 130.)
Cockfighting was one of the sports of the olden times so a venue was needed to carry on the sport. The venue in New Ross was exactly where the Houghton Hospital is now.
The "Cockpit" was there. Everyone brought their cocks to have their 'fights'. The best cocks were picked out and sent up for what was called the "Main."
The 'Main' was the final trial. The winning cocks then were for challenge.
New Ross cockfighters went long distances to cock fights carrying their cocks under their arms.Venues for Cockfights
New Ross, Graigue-na-Managh, Nash, Clongeen.
Large crowds followed the 'cocks' much like the footballers now, and heavy betting was the fashion. The journeys were mostly done on foot and the road was made short by jokes and pleasantries- Collector
