    pots or anything else which was used on the fire.
    They used to sleep in the kitchens in a hammock or a settlebed. A hammock was a swinging bed. It was attached to the collar tie by means of a rope. When they wanted to go to bed they loosened the rope and the bed came down to about a yard from the ground. It was made from yellow sally rods and when they got out of it they let it up to the roof again. Those beds had a hood over them and curtains about them. The settle bed was a big bed made of wood. This bed was in two parts and held together by hinges. In those days they had no mattresses and they made a mat from straw with a matting needle. They often made
