    best time to hatch eggs. The pullets lay in September or October when the old hens are resting. The cocks can be sold before partridge and pheasant season comes in. Chickens are not bought so eagerly then, the wild fowl are liked better.
    The place where the hens are to hatch should be away from noise and other fowl. Thunder or heavy carting kills birds in the eggs. A wide shallow box with plenty of straw packed around, hay should not be used it creates vermin. Twelve eggs is a comfortable clutch under each hen.
